AP new - synopsis.jpg

A powerful contemporary romance set in the fast-moving world of international rugby.

When your world crashes down
When they all say you’re out
When your body is broken
I will rise.
I will return.
And I will be undefeated.

Nick Renshaw is the golden boy of British rugby. When a serious injury threatens his career, he starts to spiral downwards, a broken man.
Feeling abandoned and betrayed by those closest to him, he fights to restart his life. Maybe there’s someone out there who can help him. Maybe he can find his way back toward the light. Maybe … not.
Dr. Anna Scott might be the one person who can help Nick, but she has her own secrets. And when Nick’s past comes back to haunt them both, the enigmatic doctor is more vulnerable than she seems.
Broken and betrayed, the struggle to survive seems intolerable. Who will give in, and who will rise, undefeated?

Coming January 23rd, 2018

Prologue

It’s a beautiful game.

It’s a hard game.

And even on a good day your body is battered and bruised. It’s a brutal game with blood, mud, and dirt.

See this scar on my cheek? Rugby.

See this scar running through my eyebrow? Rugby.

I have a lot of scars.

I have 13 scars on each arm from keyhole surgery, knee surgery, scars on my forehead and the back of my head, scars on my knuckles, broken fingers. I’ve had both eyelids stitched, surgery on both shoulders, suffered a broken nose twice and spiral fractures in my hands, I’ve broken my fingers so many times, I don’t even count those. I’ve had cartilage cleaned out of my left knee, two medial ligament grade two tears on each knee, three lots of surgery for Achilles tendon injuries, and once I put my bottom teeth through my top lip. Getting stitches in your mouth isn’t much fun. They tug when you eat or speak.

There’s nothing nice about rugby. Maybe that’s why I bloody love it.

Chicks dig scars? Yeah, I’ve heard that, too.

In my experience, they’re not so keen on being around while you’re healing. Being the loser who’s benched, not so sexy. Being the guy whose career went down the toilet … I’m looking a lot less appealing now.

Trusting a woman when you’re at your lowest—dumbest, stupidest thing ever.

Beat me, break me, butcher my heart.

I’m coming for you. And this time…

I’m going to win.

AP new -about the author.jpg

Stuart Reardon

Stuart is a retired England International Rugby League player whose career spanned 16 years as a professional playing for several top League clubs. He has had several major injuries that nearly ended his career just as in Undefeated, the amazing collaboration with Jane.
Currently, he is a Personal trainer living in Cheshire, and has an online fitness program: Fear Nothing Fitness.

Jane Harvey-Berrick

I enjoy watching surfers at my local beach and weaving stories of romance in the modern world, with all its trials and tribulations.
It’s been the best fun working with Stu on this story. And yes, he did think about joining the Marines once.

Meet Jackie Ladbury #AuthorSpotlight

Air Guitar and Caviar banner

I’m pleased to welcome Jackie Ladbury to Nesie’s Place today! Jackie is the author of Air Guitar andJackie Ladbury Caviar.

Jackie  was desperate to become a journalist when she left school but was ousted within minutes on the day of the exam at her local rag because she’d forgotten to bring a pen.

Short and sharp lesson learned.

Her budding writing career was not on hold for long, though, as Jackie found herself scribbling love stories of pilots and ‘hosties’ while she flew in aeroplanes of various shapes and sizes as a flight attendant herself.

Fast forward a good few years and, after being short-listed in a couple of prestigious romantic writing competitions, Jackie decided it was time to discard her stilettos, say goodbye to the skies and concentrate on writing romantic novels, where the only given is a guaranteed ‘happy ever after.’

Thanks for spending time with us today, Jackie! Let’s start with the basics –

FD: Where are you from?

JL: I’m originally from Stone in Staffordshire but I’ve lived in Hertfordshire for a long time.

FD: Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

JL: I used to write heartfelt poems and jot down ‘slice of life’ observations, but I think from an early adult age I thought it would be cool to write a novel.

FD: What inspired you to write your first book?

JL: I joined the Romantic Novelists’ Association and for the first time I could see clearly how to start at the beginning and end somewhere near the right place at the end of a novel.

FD: Who designed the cover? Air Guitar and Caviar front

JL: Air Guitar and Caviar has Southwold Pier on the cover, a photo that I took and was determined to use, so poor Berni Stevens, who is my fabulous cover designer, was stuck with it and I think did a fabulous job of showing what the novel is about.

FD: What genres do you enjoy reading and what are you reading now?

JL: I’ve always enjoyed Rom com and romance (though hate the word chick-lit) and love a good thriller or suspense story. I tend to listen to books at night as I’m a bit of an insomniac and in the daytime, I spend most of my time writing. At the moment The Magic of Stars, my second novel is being kicked into shape.

FD: How do you relax and have fun?

JL: I’m normally reading if I’m not writing but I do enjoy playing my guitar (very badly) and I go to the gym and swim which I find very relaxing.

FD: What’s one thing from your bucket list you’d like to experience or accomplish?

JL: I’d love to ‘do’ America in a Campervan but in reality, I’d probably hate it, unless I checked into a hotel once a week to feel normal and to have a bath!

FD: What are your current projects?

JL: The Magic of Stars is the second in the Blue Skies series about an air-stewardess who needs to redeem herself in her boss’s eyes, and it will be out in February. I’m also going to release a historical saga/romance early in the spring. It’s set in the Potteries and is called somewhat unoriginally, The Potter’s Daughter.

Creating a Strong Story With Character Arcs

Story Empire

A lot of work goes into writing a well-developed novel. Planning, plotting, outlining (even pansters need a general story idea). An author must create interesting characters and settings, write scenes that keep the reader interested… The list goes on.

Writers need to know proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Even when sending to an editor, the cleaner the manuscript, the better. Yes, there is lots of work involved in writing a book. But today, I want to talk (write) about character arcs.

If you want to grip your readers, the main character (or protagonist) should undergo a transformation or inner journey during the story. Make the character believable. None of us are perfect, neither are our characters. If we make them appear that way in the beginning, and nothing changes, readers are likely to feel disappointed. In some cases, they may choose not to finish the book.

Over the holidays, my…
